A post for new commuters - get on your bike

With Melbourne fuel prices soaring (almost $1.60 p/litre yesterday) and some commentators tipping the price to reach the $2.00 mark by Christmas, it's pretty obvious that car dependant commuters are going to have to re think a few things.

They don't work, do they?

Traffic lights, signs, signals, they just don't work.

Waiting at the lights, facing a red, and they don't change.

And you wonder why cyclists ride against red lights.

I'd support a 'Don't Ride the Red' campaign, but the traffic lights must respond, all of them, first!

And why do lanes stop, and not restart, even when there is road room?

And don't get me started on wayfinding!

Seen the mess that is Footscray Road recently? Someone said… Continue

100 million reasons to ride a bike

This from a story in The Age today:
"According to the 2008 World Development Report, more than 240 kilograms of corn — enough to feed one person for a year — is required to produce 100 litres of ethanol, enough to fill the tank of a sports utility vehicle." That's a long line of hungry people waiting at the petrol pump ...

optimum seat height

My furniture finally arrived from Sydney, including my bike (yay!). Took it for a short ride along the Yarra track this morning. After riding the Apollo for a couple of weeks I noticed I didn't feel like my leg was getting optimum power and that maybe the seat is too low. I'm sure it's a matter of experiment, but was just curious to know if there's any way to work out your optimum seat height?

Smile you miserable bastards

Messrs. Frigswell and Digby Caesar-Salad Esq. of West Kunting do the “Blue Steel”. Even the hunting hounds back then had stiff upper muzzles.

Why does everyone from n00b commuters to weekend warriors feel the necessity to tear along shared paths and roads as if they’re racing for sheep stations? Folks, calm down and enjoy the ride. The PB attempt can come later, at a more appropriate venue like the Hawthorn Mellowdrome, Biatch Road… Continue

Daylight saving finished!

It's good for commuters. I don't have to ride in the dark for at less another 2 weeks.

Anyway, I have ordered a L2D CE Q5 torch from the Torchworld as winter's coming.

It should arrive today.

I have watch this video in Youtube, and I think it's enough for a medium speed riding on dark bike… Continue

S.L.U.T.ting around Dandenong Creek Trail

What a beautiful morning. The Autumn sun lured quite a few people out. I headed out for a pootle up the Dandenong Creek Trail from my place. Nothing really energetic. Just out and about to roll the legs over.
