"This is a product that might be of interest. http://thebikebox.com.au/ Looks like a good solution for storing bikes in apartment carparks if space inside is at a premium."

"Thanks Peter, I was not aware of this. It is a brilliant idea - I definitely will be registering my bikes in future... if the insurance company ever comes through that is!"

"So sorry to hear about it. A number of people join this site every week because their bikes have been stolen, it's very upsetting. Melbourne must be in the middle of a bike theft wave. I know it doesn't help you now, but I always urge…"

Stolen Bikes!

Hi Melbourne Cycling Community,Last Thursday I had the unfortunate experience of walking down to the underground carpark of my apartment block, and finding that my road and mountain bikes had been stolen. The road bike is a significantly upgraded and customised Fuji Roubaix and the mountain bike is a Ghost Lector 5800. I purchased the mountain bike online last December from Chain Reaction Cycles in the UK, they don't sell them here and they have a pretty distinctive look - take a look at…See More

"Exactly, HPC can expect you to come back for servicing/repair or small accessories - they are providing a good service but missed out on the original sale, probably due to a markup by their supplier that is just greedy. !00% markups are pretty much…"

"When we decided to build a second Xtracycle, Dirt Works had just stopped importing them, so there was very little new stock around. However, what we purchased online was still better than what we could have got at the current retail price of $800.00…"

"It's a bit harsh to describe it as being ripped off.  Online shopping involves little cost to the merchant as they just need a warehouse and a computer. sometimes just run out of their house in their spare time. your LBS has to pay for…"

"Correct, it is the likes of Monza Imports and Casson's who are the extra pair of hands that the cycling retailers have to deal with. Not only do they make it more expensive for us, they also dictate the size range and colour availability."

"I have a small business in the bike industry & buy a lot of parts wholesale from various distributors. Quite often I am asked for an item - most recently a workstand - which I know sells online (eBay) for less than I can get it wholesale, so I…"

Support your Local Bike Shop at the risk of being ripped off?

On the weekend I bought a new pair of NorthWave cycling sunnies from Vuelta Cycles in St Kilda for $90, only to find them on the web for $52 (with free shipping) only a few hours later. It doesn’t feel good to be ripped of to the tune of almost $40, but I’m wondering if I should calm myself and accept the higher cost, in the knowledge that I’ve supported my LBS? I like to see our bike shops doing well and I feel sad when I hear that times are tough for some because of the huge shift to online…See More

Profile Information

What sort of riding do you do ?
Quick Answer: I am a bike nerd, Commuting, Road Cycling, Mountain Biking, XC, Single Speed
Where in Melbourne or nearby do you live ?
Inner city
Now tell us about your bicycles ...
I am a fan of all types of cycling... and after many years of trying to use the one bike for everything (not a good idea), I cracked and got myself a Giant hardtail for the XC, an SE fixie for the w'ends and a Fuji road bike for the commute and long weekend road rides.
What is the best thing about riding?
Freedom
A few words about yourself. (This bit is entirely optional!)
A bit of a bike nerd, love travelling, work is just an unfortunate necessity, asian food and all types of art make me happy, have a totally unjustifiable fear of small people
