Wendy-jane Anderson replied to Chelsea Carey's discussion Electric Bikes - Improvements? Pros and Cons?Hi wendy,
i have a Christiania Bike. I bought the frame and we builtr the box ourselves to save a bit of money. I love the bike and would reccomend it to anyone. it fits 100kg in the box so that's kids and shopping. Have had it for about three years and had no problems, not even a puncture. Are you going to put a motor on it?
Chelsea Carey said… Hi Wendy,
In response to your comment... if you're going to buy an electric bike for 4000 dollars then there's a lot of options for you, but honestly only half of the ebikes out there are even worth considering. Battery life is a massive issue. I was talking to a man the other day who started out with a range of about 40km per charge and within two years it had dropped down to 17kms per charge. Go for a battery with Lithium polymer technology as they have no memory (half charge, full charge, whatever you like..it won't damage the battery) and also they last a lot longer. The batteries in the ebikes at the company I work for are lithium polymer and last between 4-5 years with frequent use..and even then, they only drop down to 90% charge. So they can last a long time.
Cargocycles I've heard good reviews about, so if that counts for anything..! Anyway, it's completely up to you what you decide. I'm not sure how much torque you get from a cargo but take one for a test ride and see. The ebike I have (from the company I work for...what a great perk of the job!) has great hill-climbing ability and that's what I really need. Some ebikes just die when you hit a hill, and torque from a 200watt motor is hard to come by.
Anyway, hope this helps. Let me know how you go! :)
