Expats Gone Wild

You live in Melbourne, but weren't born here, and you ride a bicycle for any reason. You might come from Sydney (we forgive you, at least you escaped ;-) or Saint Petersburg, if you ride, you belong here!

Profile Information

What sort of riding do you do ?
Quick Answer: I am a bike nerd, Commuting, Utility/Transport, Road Cycling, Mountain Biking, Recreational, Touring, S.L.U.T (Sustainable Low Cost Transport), Whatever
Where in Melbourne or nearby do you live ?
Bentleigh
Now tell us about your bicycles ...
2007 Cell S2200 road bike
1993 Giant Iguana chromo rigid MTB (my ute)
1996 Giant ATX-970 ("Lives" in Hobart as transport for when I'm visiting family.)
2005 Burley Buggy found in somebody's hard rubbish drop and converted to a camping trailer
2010 Crane Hinge folding bike (ex Aldi, cheap and cheerful)
What is the best thing about riding?
By not driving (or even owning) a car I'm healthier, wealthier, wiser and happier.
A few words about yourself. (This bit is entirely optional!)
Moved to Melbourne to live 18 months ago. 36 years of on-road cycling (31 years driving experience), car-free, foundation president of Bicycle Tasmania (last on committee in any capacity in 1996)

I also believe that because the law allows cycling without a licence (which is an old french word for privilege), then cycling is a right, while driving is privilege. To me, this means that cyclists should have the legal priority over motorists. (And yes, pedestrians should have the legal priority over cyclists, too.)

It'd be funny, but...

If this isn't yet another example, proving it's too easy to get a driving licence, what is. Even allowing for youthful impulsiveness, somebody who would do this would have been flagged in basic psych profiling used in police and military recruiting tests.

And apparently another twit was booked for driving flat-out, going the wrong way down a one-way st, with 7 people in their car this morning,… Continue

Hmm, hadn't factored the possibility of rain into my RTB

Posted on October 15, 2009 at 6:17pm 5 Comments

Sunday looks like "Showers, clearing early," but just how early is early?

I've been planning to travel light. Light, long sleeves and legs, one spare tube, a tiny puncture repair kit, cable lock velcroed to handlebars, 4 bananas, 6 muesli bars. Now it looks like I need a rain coat, at least for some of the trip.

I might start off wearing a garbage bag...

On track for RTB

Proper RTB training began for me this year once I'd got my move out of the way. Although I was living 15km out of town in Hobart (when I'd bought the Hobart place, my mum was worried I was "moving halfway to Launceston"), prep for the move to Melbourne and winter weather were cutting training days to about 2 a week. Once I hit August in Melbourne, I was pulling 4 commutes a week on the bike and living 15km from work, just like in Hobart.

Doing irregular shifts, I sometimes get short… Continue

Hi Steve,

Which Hobart suburb are you from? I've been over here about 20 years & have lost touch with whatever going on down there, but have been attempting to stay up to date w/ bicycle stuff with Tim from Bicycle Tas & the Bottles & Chains crew.

cheers,

ChrisS
