Legally you just have to turn off at Werribee and come back through Laverton, Williamstow, Footscray or come back onto the highway via Grieve Parade for a faster ride...
There are many bike friendly cafe places around melbourne and suburbs. The owners are quite aware of the connection riders have with their machinery and respect that, even offering parking for your bike next to tables or not even quibble parked ag...
It doesn't seem right to have a beaut bike and then have to carry 10 kgs of lock to secure it then some bar stard will jump on the wheels and buckle them out of frustration.
If you value your ride then insurance is the way to go. Costly as it may ...

I have ridden many times to Geelong from Melbourne travelling along the freeway and the back roads near the You Yangs.
The back roads are very much quieter, a little rougher with surface finish and narrower meaning if cars or trucks are using...
