Euan replied to Mike rubbo's discussion The New bike share contract
"I've said this before but it's worth saying again: there is no evidence that sit up bicycles are any safer than drop bar bicycles. None. Zip. Nada. I've three bicycles, two of them have drop bars. Guess which is the only bicycle…"

Euan replied to Richard Monfries's discussion Hands up if you can only ride with an iPod in your ears
"I'm unclear as to your point. If you're saying that there are some drivers who use music loud enough to drown out sirens, yes this is true. It's also true of some cyclists. You'd have to have very good headphones turned up quite…"

Euan replied to Richard Monfries's discussion Hands up if you can only ride with an iPod in your ears
"I really don't understand this hypervigilence thing. Commuting is mundane and incredibly predictable; I find it relaxing. I exercise the same amount of vigilance as I do when I'm walking; probably less than when I drive. Cycling is not an…"

Euan replied to Richard Monfries's discussion Hands up if you can only ride with an iPod in your ears
"I had my hearing tested on leaving the army and it is very good. For me hearing is not very useful at all. It has never saved me on the road as I _always_ check that where I'm going is clear with my eyes before proceeding. That's what…"

Euan replied to Richard Monfries's discussion Hands up if you can only ride with an iPod in your ears
"I think you got that the wrong way round. You need eyes to confirm what your ears are telling you. Hearing is incredibly unreliable, especially in an urban environment. In fact I find hearing quite useless and rely 100% on my eyes."

Euan replied to Richard Monfries's discussion Hands up if you can only ride with an iPod in your ears
"It's not the looking at it that matters so much, it's your brain activity. When you're having a conversation on the radio or the phone, you're trying to fill in the missing body language in order to correctly interpret the tone…"

Euan replied to Richard Monfries's discussion Hands up if you can only ride with an iPod in your ears
"Using a radio and listening to music are two different things. What takes our attention is not so much the sound but interpreting; trying to fill in the gaps of body language and coming up with a reply. Listening to music is much more passive,…"

Euan replied to Richard Monfries's discussion Hands up if you can only ride with an iPod in your ears
"Using eyes is far more important. People are blaming the iPod because it was there, people are ignoring the fact that this man didn't look for a tram on a tram track. That's far more `duh.'"

Euan replied to Phill Cameron's discussion Back Problems
"Cycling posture is not what most people expect it to be, riding with poor cycling posture can exacerbate muscle problems in many areas of the body. The late Sheldon Brown has written a good piece on cycling posture, it helped me quite a bit when I…"
