I don't have any specific examples or data to hand, but Melbourne Uni is known as one of the bike theft hot spots of Melbourne.

Disabling the bike could have been a tactic to allow the original thief to come back later and strip it at their leisure. But it could just as easily have been opportunistic thieves--a bike without a front wheel that hasn't been removed for a few days might look abandoned, and abandoned bikes tend to get treated as public property (for example see Abandoned Bicycles of New York).

This is from my housemate so its second hand info - she had her front wheel stolen at Melbourne Uni over the Easter weekend, left it there for a day, (as she didnt want to take the frame back on a tram) or so and found it stripped even more when she got back to pick it up. Any one know if this is regular occurance?

Having a Stolen Bike listing is a great idea and the early entries highlight the need to have a good recent photograph of your bike and another of its serial number. It's also a good idea to have it engraved with your Drivers Licence Number.
