Hi All,

Hooray I have my Gazelle! It is fantastic.

I love the styling and how everything is integrated. The Dutch sure know how to make a bike!

Are there any organised rides for pedelecs? If so, I'd love to go on one.

However, if not, I will be posting rides (when I do one) on my blog, so maybe someone will be interested in repeating one with me. www.pedelecing.com

Hi All, I have ordered a Gazelle Orange Plus Innergy XT which should arrive in mid December. I had a test ride at Ausbike and then a long test ride at MySpokes in Mooroolbark (about two hours from where I live in Geelong).

I also tested the PowerPed Legato, but I preferred the Gazelle. I'm really looking forward to getting it.

A 30km round trip. I am only moderately fit and want to start riding more.

Hi guys, I'd just like to share some info on the Schwinn Tailwind electric bike we bought.  The bike feels noticeably heavy but well made.  Schwinn bikes generally come from the likes of Kmart in this country, but in the US they can be bought with higher end components.  The Tailwind comes with an enclosed chain, Nexus 8 speed (not premium) hub with roller brake, a 200 watt front hub motor which works surprisingly well (and quietly as it uses rollers instead of gears).  Pedal initiated drive and a three stage assist selector with battery gauge. The electric components are Chinese and as a result do not have the best sealing.  We had a problem with the bike losing power in a heavy rain shower, but it soon recovered the next day. If the bike were to be transported in the rain I would be prudent to cover it.

The most awesome thing about the bike is the battery and charger, which can be fully charged from flat in around 45 minutes.  The battery is only 24V 4.2Ah and is surprisingly big and heavy for a lithium pack.  It's noticeably bigger than the Gazelle battery and less than half the capacity, making the Tailwind good for around 20km on maximum assist. 

All in all if the Tailwind were to have a battery like that of the Gazelle Ebike it would be excellent value (Tailwinds were going for around $1000 at Christmas).  I'm sure I would be up for modding it with a solar bike battery should my wife continue to use it.

Hi All,

Sorry it's been a time since updating. The bike I use as a commuter is A2B Metro (by ultramotor) weighs about 32kg with an extra battery pack this gets to 38kg. I'm around 90kg which brings the total to 128, about 12 kg under the capacity. I have a commute of 14.2km each way and ride between 4 days and 6 days, depending on shifts. Motly in peak hour traffic.

I use the peddal assist constantly to assist me to get a speed average of 24kph with spurts of up to 40(although this may be due to gps failing to track correctly!!)

The importer/manufacturer tells me the range is about 30km , with the extra battery pack bring this up to 60, but the experience shows with the peddeling I do, there is a probable range of 25 per battery, though I do not intend to test this due to the weight of the bike.

I have found drivers are generally good as long as I stick to bike lanes, signal and do not try to lane split. I do lane split to get to the front at lights so I can be seen.

I've ridden 17 times to and from work, I've been cut off once (do not ever ride near the Smart Park on La Trobe Street). I have come off due to my not understanding the dynamics of the bike once as well, but this taught me a lot about stopping distances especially in the wet!

Sorry this was such a long one, but I'm really enjoying the ride and would appreciate any suggestions in relation to how to make it safer, quicker and especially how to maintain the bike.

 

May I also give a big thank you to Pony Bikes fir fixing the bike so well and under warranty, efter the car vs bike thing 2 weeks ago.

Hi Eamonn,

Welcome! Great to see that you've purchased an electric bike and that you are using it for your regular work commute. Please feel free to fill us in on your experiences with it. It would be great to get a better understanding of the length of your daily trip, whether you use the electrics as pedal assist and what sort of range you are getting out of the batteries.
