Biomechanics uses the principles of mechanics for solving problems related to the structure and function of living organism. It is the science concerned with the internal and external forces acting on the human body and the effects produced by these forces.
Biomechanical analysis involves describing the movement in terms of kinematics, kinetics, and muscle activity. Kinematics is the form, pattern, or sequencing of movement with respect to time quantified by distance, velocity and acceleration. Kinetics is the study of the action of forces.
In cycling, certain biomechanical aspects need to be considered to ensure injury-free, goal-oriented cycling. Including emphasizes lower extremity muscle actions and joint excursions, seat height, pedal position, pedaling rate, force application, and pedaling symmetry.
The need for a biomechanical approach to cycling exists since a great deal of the literature is primarily physiologic in nature. The purpose of this group is to review and discuss biomechanical aspects of cycling to make cyclists and their advisors aware of the important of biomechanics to maximise power output while maintaining a comfortable and injury-resistant riding position. This group does not have any discussions yet.
