Melbourne Cyclist

Cycling in Melbourne Australia

Bloody hell, sorry about the mass emails earlier. The site didn't respond so I stupidly tried to send the message by continually clicking the button like an ice addict.

Anyway, perhaps better than the email function... a discussion instead: which I didn't see until after I sent the 20 emails!

Here's the same thing I wrote in the email:

Hi all, I'm about 180cm, need a road bike frame very quickly. I used to have a steel frame with square geometry and seat tube height about 58cm. I think 56 to 58cm might be close enough, depending on top tube length.

Can be steel or old, so long as it's ready to roll. I would prefer it to be a race frame!

When I say race frame, I mean something that I can race on, not a street cruiser with relaxed geometry. I guess if you're not sure, let me know anyway and I can see for myself.

Cheers!
Ben

Visited any of the local haunts like CERES shed, Lygon Cycles or Human Powered? Also have a gander at the CCCC ads.
I have a slightly unusual one on my hands that I've decided to get rid of. It might be of interest to you. It's big - 62 square by my measure - but I find it quite comfortable to ride despite technically fitting better on a 54 (~175cm with short legs).

Imagine what would happen if you took a brand new late '80s (?) Malvern Star Triathlete - double-butted lugged Japanese CrMo with a full Exage 500EX gruppo, rode it a half dozen times, then put in in the shed and left it for 20 years.

That's what this is.

The original brake pads are still almost as-new, the original tyres still had moulding marks on them despite the white-wall sidewalls being perished away to the casing (I replaced them with some cheap Michelins). The drop-outs still have fully intact paint. There's some surface rust on some of the exposed steel in the components (eg adjusting screws and the springs in the barrel adjusters), and some of the decals are a slightly scratched (probably from being knocked over by the lawnmower).

It's a lovely ride, even though I only have about an inch of seatpost showing (I have negative standover height). I reckon it meets your "race" requirements. It's not what would be considered a "triathlon" bike in this decade.

I'm in Ballarat, but I'm sure we could get it to you pretty quick.

Hi Tim and Chris, thanks for the tips and the offer. I haven't seen CCCC before, and I will be going in to Human Powered this weekend. Lygon cycles might be a go-er too: right near work.

Tim I think I'll pass. The bike I've got at the moment is alright, but it's too big, probably about the same as the one you have. I don't want another one that's too big- it just gets uncomfortable after a while.

How are the cargo cycles selling? i would guess that there'd be loads of folk wanting to downsize their cars at the moment!

Ben
No worries Ben. If anybody else is interested, let me know.

Cargo Cycle number 37 was delivered this week - another inner Melbourne buyer. They're getting out there, and we're still having fun.

Hi Tim, Do you still have the MS Triathlete?

I have been dreaming of an old style Colnago but way outside my budget so I thought of a local Melbourne classic.

I'm 186cm tall with standard long legs, is it a large 62cm frame?

Regards,

Mal.
Sorry, the Triathlete frame went on Evilbay months ago.

Still have the wheels if anybody is looking for a cheap set of good quality 7-speed wheels. It's the only 700c wheelset I own, so they're just kind of sittin' there with no frame to fit on.
