Touring Melb. early Feb. I get off the boat from Tas. 6pm and would like to know if there's somewhere close to Port Melb. that's bike friendly and good to use as a base for a week....with laundry/ showers/ secure lcok-up etc.
Station Pier, where you'll hop off the ferry, is very close to the middle of the city (the CBD) so you will not be able to camp with a tent nearby. However there are many hostels and backpackers in inner Melbourne, particularly in North Melbourne, which is about 5 km from the pier.
If you really prefer to use the tent, some suburban caravan parks have tent sites and the facilities you're looking for. Otherwise, you might like to consider camping just outside Greater Melbourne, but you could be up for about an hour in a suburban train.
I ended up using Barkly Hotel in St.Kilda for 3 nights.
I didn't like it.
You had to swipe the security card 4 times to get entry to your room. A bit like the opening credits for Get Smart where Max goes through all manner of security devices to get to work. I felt I was in a police state. No access to the balcony either. Won't go back.
Big4 Holiday Park in Coburg was brilliant and only a very flat 20K ride from the city. $75 a night and the self-contained cabin was heaven. Friendly helpful staff. Didn't use the pool though; in hot weather I can imagine everyone uses it like a bath ;0)
Had a ball in Melb. ACDC at Etihad, IKEA (there's no IKEA in Tas.) and the roads/ drivers are all bike friendly.
