Cycling in Melbourne Australia

Ive just migrated over here from UK. I have a bmx and a single speed and only the bare essentials in terms of tools.

I know bike tools cost a bomb, but where is a good place to get them from?
I was thinkin perhaps an online retailer might sell specialist tools like bb extractors and that for a lot cheaper than the local bike shop.
Any idea?

If you become a member of the Bike Shed in Brunswick East you can use their tools onsite to maintain your bike. Most bike shop do stock tools, otherwise el cheapo bike tool kits can start at $30, although you've got to decide what budget you're working to and obviously what you require.

Cecil Walker in the CBD have Park Tools, online you can order Torpedo 7 which have Super B and BBB tools at a budget price. You could also try eBay and filter results via postcode.
Hi Simon

If you want to buy bike-specific tools then the online shops are the way to go for price. There is a decent range of Park Tools on PBK (www.probikekit.com) and Chain Reaction (www.chainreactioncycles.com). Both these shops sell park tools for roughly half the price of shops in Melbourne. For example, I purchased the Park cable cutters from BSC in Elizabeth street a while back for $95. They are available on PBK now for about $60 plus $10 flat shipping (i.e. $10 for everything you order, no matter how much that may be). PBK also has their own line of tools at a bargain basement price (you can get a decent set of tools with a toolbox for $90 http://www.probikekit.com/display.php?code=T0053 ). Chain Reaction's shipping costs are steep, but if you order over $520 they ship for free. Chain reaction has a significantly wider range that PBK. Be warned though if you start buying from PBK or CRC your credit card will suffer - these shops are addictive.

When it comes to generic tools such as torque wrenches, screwdrivers, vices etc., there is a shop in South Melbourne called Just Tools that is worth a look. They are very price competitive and will do the same price in the shop as their online shop, so if you can get there you can avoid the wait for postal delivery.
great - i used to use CRC back in UK
Ive already started putting together a shopping basket on probekit - looks great, thanks for that
Abbotsford Cycles tend to have decent prices.
Hi Simon,

Welcome to Oz, I'm originally from Derby in the midlands, north of the border! I am a distributor for Unior Tools, manufactured in Europe. I have just put in a complete range of their tools in my workshop. Unior's Melbourne Office Service is very efficient and their bicycle Tool quality is excellent. If you would like a catalogue, e-mail me at info@mechanarchy.com.au

Cheers

Andy
