Melbourne Cyclist

Cycling in Melbourne Australia

As per title.

Me: when I last posted back in July I was tottering about on a 21" men's bike which I purchased for$200 secondhand from a listing in Gumtree. Today I am the proud owner of a Dahon Eco3, and have done a fair whack of pedaling already.

Still trying to get my folding times down, and already dreaming of buying a Mu Sl (8kg!!)...

Me: On hols at the moment, so Friday, I went for a casual, lunch time spin down to South Melbourne. 19km each way. 19km/h headwind each way. (I don't get how headwinds change direction just as I do)-: Still a creditable 25km/h average, though.

Despite showery, windy, gusty conditions, I really enjoyed the Bay and its moods, and the riding was brilliant. Holding the middle of the left lane on St Kilda St and Beach Rd (for my safety) resulted in no hassles. Probably the last time I'll be able to do that before they take out all the parking and it becomes a de facto freeway.

Was a virgin ride for my new messenger bag, too. A big-arsed, Banjo Brothers job from Cyclestyle, a birthday gift from my in-laws, and it's great!
Banjo Brothers make some awesome stuff.

I bought one of their large commuter backpacks last year and it's fantastic. Good to see they have an Aus distributer now.
Um not much. Last race at Lysterfield I wore out 4 pairs of brake pads and more recently have dusted off my old Kos Kruiser (26" BMX from the 80's) and have been riding around on that. I'll put some pics up at some stage.
Took the MTB out yesterday for the first time for a while and did a "clean" 25km.
Lots of mud on the trails - so stuck to the roads and paths mostly.
Oh, and must enter the Otway Odyssey this week - after I get paid...
OK on the folder; I had to google it... 15 seconds they say !

And here is the pic:

Glad you like your biking!
This is the closest folding bike I've found that compares to a real bike...

WOW!

Goodness knows I've LONGED to be able to wheel the bike around while folded rather than having to carry it. For example, the bus stop is only 600m away. It is just close enough to look silly unfolding the bike just to walk the distance, yet far enough for me to groan at the thought of carrying an ungainly 12kg on my shoulder for that distance.

I know, I know. I'm a softie.
Yeah it wasn't until I rode my friends bike that I found you could have a folding bike that was also light
I could never get used to the feel of the tiny wheels and the harsh ride though
He's opened a web store selling light weight parts for brompton bikes:

ooooh sounds great! love to see some pics :)
Also, cycled the dogs with my partner yesterday.

It was remarkably easy and fun - I tied the leash of the pure-bred beagle to the front tube (headtube?) rather than the seatpost as it was less likely to get in the way. I had thought that it would be more dangerous since if he pulled I would be jerked off course. As it turns out, I simply made sure I didn't allow him the chance to get distracted by simply not slowing down.

We cycled about 8km total along a bike trail in Rowville/Scoresby back and forth. By the time we started heading back I was dragging the "fat" dog more than he was keeping up. While I was still active after the ride, I can't say the same for the beagle. So ripped (not a fat beagle at all, when he runs you can literally see his muscles), yet so unfit.
What happens if he chases a cat? Sounds dangerous...
The pedal is stronger than a sooky dog. :) Gotta remember that while beagles are strong dogs, they are still medium-sized dogs... I reckon I will start tying a piece of treat to the left handle (since he runs on my left) and having him chase the treat!
What if you tow him on a trailer with a treadmill attached to your bikes drive train? Then you wouldn't need to pedal at all! :P
