Melbourne Cyclist

Cycling in Melbourne Australia

I am a reasonably keen leisure cyclist from England, who likes to cycle round the places he visits. Often this is Holland, where of course cycling is up rather a level from England.

I'm just wondering how feasible this is in Melbourne.  For instance is it easy to hire a bicycle?  What is cycling like in the city?  Are there safe places to leave a bicycle around the city?

On another point, I'm a coeliac and am looking for a nice B&B, small hotel in the city or Richmond, which knows about my diet.  Any ideas?

You could contact Matt Hurst at The Humble Vintage to see if he has a bike that might be suitable, and his prices seem fairly reasonable; http://www.thehumblevintage.com/info.html
His bikes mostly look like fairly basic 70's and 80's models, but should be fine for getting about town.

While it is not Holland or Denmark, Melbourne is a very pleasant place to ride around, particularly in the areas closer to the city; it is relatively flat and roads are wide compared to places like London. As far as safely leaving your bike around town; it depends on the bike, the place and the lock...most places are fine for a few hours, overnight is always a little more risky.
I think Beach Road Cycles have some hire bikes. Google maps for them...

The Coeliac Society might be able to help with accommodation; don't know. - http://www.vic.coeliac.org.au/

BikeNOW in Sth Melb also hires bikes. Melbourne's good for cycling, being relatively flat. Locking it around the city - depends on the bike, but I wouldn't be too keen.
Thanks for your help.

I think I've found the hotel, just hearing from them.

If it's any help, a few year ago I made a blog post about Melbourne day trips by bike—most info should still be current.
