Cycling in Melbourne Australia

Thinking of buying a unicycle of the 'net.  Never ridden one before.  They range from 18" to 24" wheel size.  Any idea which size is easier to ride.  Going to be some family fun for my daughters.

according to my unicycling mate, Jeremy:

smaller wheels are easier to balance
bigger wheels travel more distance and cope better with undulating surfaces
24" is preferred by many as a good compromise of manouvreability and distance capability
24" is my preferred off road tyre with a Maxxis High Roller 2.3"(?) tyre giving nice shock absorbsion and good all round grip
as an indication, pedalling a 24" uni on flat ground is faster than walking but slower than jogging

 Good luck!

For me it would be one with training wheels. I have hopeless balance and a unicycle would be a disaster for me. Goodonya for having a go on one. I am sure there will be one or two people who can help you on your quest.

The unicycle can be learned in afternoon but takes a lifetime to master... or so the quote goes. I can nearly find balance on a 20" but have only managed to lose skin trying a 24" - I'd recommend the 20" to start with, then if you manage to learn how to ride the sucker well enough, upgrade to the 24. They're usually quite cheap if you shop around.

Thanks Steve.  Would you still say the 20" given I'm 6'1" and 85kg?  And to add to this, the good lady wife is 5'2" and would most definitely want to get involved.

You can pick up beginners' 20" jobs for as little as $99 new online, start on a 20 and, if it sticks, get the 24 and you can both do it together ;-)
