Melbourne Cyclist

Cycling in Melbourne Australia

I've got a proposal that cyclists should be given priority over cars on Yarra Boulevard, Kew. This is a popular cycling route with beautiful views and some great hills. Turning it over to cyclists would make it safer and promote Melbourne as a bicycle-friendly city. Having a substantial street where bicycles have supplanted cars would be a very powerful symbol.

I've sketched out how it might work here and would appreciate comments.

Hmm... it certainly has merit, and it is a great training strip.

However, I think if there was going to be a bike boulevard, it should be something that is more of a commuter route. Having it exclusively for the purpose of cycling may send elitist messages that I wouldn't want.
Yeh, I agree, far better to campaign vigourously for enforcement of existing provisions in traffic law that make all road users responsible for their duty of care for all other road users.

Ghettos never work, somebody always winds up excluded and resentful. Separation of cars and bikes, especially involving the displacement of cars, is not going to happen in the next 10 years, if ever. Other than by forcing bikes off the road onto winding, narrow, useless cycle paths.
