Cycling in Melbourne Australia

I see many others riding by themselves on Sunday mornings so I have an idea:  Meet up at Cafe Racer at 9am and ride to Black Rock or Mordy return.  You can ride from somewhere else to make the ride longer or, just turn up for this one and enjoy a coffee at Velocino before the return trip. And, if there's nobody else at Racer, then you (and I) haven't lost out: we'll still be riding alone anyway!  How will we know who eachother is?  Probably be the ones standing on the footpath alongside our bikes, or sitting at a table with one coffee in front of us!!  No more nigel nofriends !!!

Great idea for this one, as it can get boring by yourself, maybe we could just roll up the days paper under our arms to make our-self obvious lol, easy way, just say what bike you have and what color your top is.
Tim, great response: Sense of humour mandatory!!  Hoping to get there this Sunday, but if not, hopefully more cyclists will be there and, as I mentioned before, no skin off anyway.  If I do get there I'll be on a blue & white bike with white handle bar strapping.  Thinking someone from the other end of Beach Rd uses the same initiative to start the same sort of thing, meeting at Mordy or something.  It's a vision of mine to have a time and place each Saturday and Sunday for solo riders to meet up - regardless of having one person to organise the whole thing.  Wouldn't that be great ..... !  Come on everyone, let's get this initiative off the ground!
You may find that many of those solo riders are experienced riders and ride solo for a reason. When they race they wear a number but when they are training they want to get the workout they planned to do and not the workout that a random unorganised, chaotic bunch provides.
I agree DJ. Although I like a bit of company I often have to slow down or speed up to avoid being tailgated by a bunch of people on Beach Road who I don't know from a bar of soap and who's riding skills are perhaps not that good. I'll only ride with people I know and trust and don't really fancy being tailended by someone with no bunch riding skills.

Hi there Snoopy, how is the progress on this?

Hi Tim, I was happy this discussion was 'mentioned in dispatches' in the Melbourne Cyclist newsletter, but not too many intersted I'm afraid.  I appreciate what others have said regarding solo riders doing their own thing as they're training for racing etc, and don't worry, I do regular shop rides so I do bunch riding, but my aim with this idea is to  provide an option for people who don't happen to be in training for an event.  I have periods during the year when there isn't an event on the horizon that I'm training for (I do the endurance ones) when I just want company for a leisurely trip along Beach Rd, especially this time of year when it's light and warm.  Great opportunity to swap riding stories and find out what else is out there, what other people are doing!  Cycling is so diverse, everyone who gets on their steed has a story: Would love to get this up and running to go the distance so it's something everybody knows about, but nobody can remember how it started!!!

Well,so it seems your not a novice to bunch riding, i will come for a ride one Sunday, as you said 9am, which is more a suitable time for a Sunday, oh, maybe we should think of a name for this team, lol, have no members as yet, but, my word,  we will have a awesome name for it.

I regularly ride up and down the beach road on my own but would welcome some company . Usually it's weekday mornings as I work weekends . I'm 59 and quite a fit , seasoned rider who lives in Carlton . I used to do a little racing in the 70s but mostly my interest has been more in touring and general road riding . Any I'm good mannered in bunch riding & like to think of myself as good company . Anyone interested in contacting me to team up , please do so .( by the way I ride a red '75 Bottechia rebuild )

Cheers ,Ken

Wow ken would that Bottechia be a collectors item now, I work shift work to, so, have time of during the week when i ride to.

Here's a Saturday group ride if anyone's keen: http://www.melbournecyclist.com/forum/topics/tenax-ride-2!

Hi! Im insterested to join as well if there is a group going together this sunday!

Hi Kriztala, from this discussion I got so much interest I created a Group and called it The 9 O'Clockers - just go to the Groups page here on Melbourne Cyclist and look for the pink panther logo - that's us.  It tells you where to meet etc.  I won't be there this Sunday as I'll be overseas, but I know the others will be there - have a look at the Group and let them know you'll join them this Sunday!
