this summer I'm training for the Ride Like Crazy (the day before the TDU challenge tour, also follows the official stage route) and will have my bike with me in Melb. over xmas.
In order to get in my kms I need to do a long ride while there and since I need to go to sorrento on xmas eve, that seems like a good thing to do.
Now the traffic will be *horrible* so any suggestions on a route??
I thought I would start by going down the eastlink trail. I gather that's all paved. What happens when it turns into the dandenong creek trail (I'm on a roadie) ?
And then what do I do once I get to carrum?
Also, I want to do 80km but i suppose its an option to be driven to the start if that will make things more pleasant.

The D'nong creek trail becomes gravel from Greens Rd down to the finish at Carrum. I often ride Springvale Rd all the way down to Beach Rd at Edithvale. If it's early in the morning the traffic is light and I don't have any dramas. Later in the day is a different story though. Coming back i will take a right turn at Cheltenham rd and follow that up until it cross Eastlink where it is concrete all the way back.

ok thanks. I'll take springvale rd then. I guess if I leave at 7 the traffic around brandon park and springvale shopping centres should be OK and then I'll be going against traffic .. I hope.
Or else I could go down eastlink to greens rd and the frankston dandenong rd to nepean hwy??

Springvale Rd all the way to the bay, I am sure the Eastlink trail ( from the map) wanders and meanders all over the place and if you are off to Sorrento a direct route would be a sought after item... once you get to Carrum, just turn left on the Nepean and follow your nose... you can head via Esplanade from Mornington through to Safety Beach in front of Mt Martha which is kinda purty... or do the back road and fly down Balcome Hill & Mt Martha, and slowly up the dip in the middle then the back road past the drive in and in front of Arthurs seat... (although I'd do thesafety beach / Esplanade ride as the dip into Safety beach marina is a super descent...real woohoo stuff...)
the trip around the bay to Sorrento from Safety Beach is very pitchaskew too, so take the camera, coin for coffee and cake stops and wonder about the return journey if its a northerly blowing ..umm ride to Frankston and the Train back to the city is always a (sound) option...
BTW, a great training ride and 100klms round trip is Black Rock clock tower to Safety Beach and return... stop at Mt Martha for Bakeries, Coffee, snacks and a beach view.. :)

Thanks Rob,
I just plotted the route, springvale rd, nepean hwy, pt nepean rd, on Google maps.
It works out to be 90km. So I'm going to be a wuss and ask my husband to drive me to ferntree gully rd.
Definitely will take some coins for cake stops. :)
Then I will sleep all day at sorrento and annoy the in-laws! What would xmas be without annoyed in-laws?
