Cycling in Melbourne Australia

Hello fellow cyclists, new to these forums, they seem great though! :)

Anyways, thinking about visiting a friend out in Dandenong this weekend, never ridden out that way before so no clue on the best way to get there…I know we’re not allowed to ride on The Monash, so that’s out, would following Princes Freeway/Dandenong Rd be the best bet, or is there a path I can follow?

Solid sections uninterrupted by traffic lights would be great!

Cheers in advance

Good plan, thanks mate...I don't drive, at all, so pretty geographically challenge on the best ways to travel around this fair city...along the bay track would be awesome really, now here's hoping for a nice day!

:)

Hey there, suprisingly(NOT) there is no direct route that is easy even though there is a train line that runs directly to Dandenong. Princess Hwy is a nightmare and can be a little un-nerving going in and out of the service lanes when you have cars coming up behind you quite fast.

I ride from Oakleigh to Dandenong and follow the train tracks, I have to cross over the tracks about 5 times in order to keep following them and if you don't cross over at the right times then the roads often end and it can be a nightmare turning back to get on the right side of the tracks.

I actually aggree with Ben. Follow the Beach Rd till you get past Mentone Hotel and then turn left on Warrigul Rd. Go up Warrigul Rd and turn right onto Nepean Hwy and then straight away follow the road left down Lower Dandenong Rd and keep going straight. It becomes Cheltenham Rd and has a dedicated bike lane and goes all the way into Dandenong.

Have fun.
