Cycling in Melbourne Australia

Relocated back to Melbourne - need to find a new bunch!

Apologies for the repost - I deleted this thread after posting it onto the wrong Category...

I've recently relocated back to Melbourne after 16 yrs in Sydney and need to find a bunch to ride with.

I've moved into Prahran and ideally would like to find a friendly local bunch who do a morning ride a couple of mornings per week (ideally an hour or so at 6am(ish), and a longer weekend ride - say 2-3hrs.  all followed by coffee of course!  I'm not enjoying solo training rides so much for two main reasons - 1) I like the social side of cycling, and 2) it's way too easy to slack off a bit riding solo so I can feel my core strength evaporating!  There's no substitute for needing to hang onto the back of the bunch when you feel the pinch! :-)

I'd describe myself as a keen recreational cyclist who occasionally competes.  Reasonably strong with above average fitness for my age I guess - 50yrs old.  In Sydney my "sweet spot" pace wise for a training ride was in the 30-35kph average range.  I'd guess it'll work out a little bit higher than that here in Melbourne given that it's so much flatter (generally).

Any suggestions welcome of course...

Cheers John

Hi John, not sure if you have a group as yet but we have a group (5 of us) that rides most Saturdays leaving from Mills St and Beaconsfield Parade adn depending on how everyone feels we either go to Mordi, Frankston or Mt Eliza. We are a mid morning group that heads out around 9am, average is between 30 and 34 again depending on how everyone feels. Age of the guys 28 to 49 so good spread and good guys to ride with as well. Pretty casual but still like trying differnt types of group riding tactics to keep things interesting. More then welcome to join in and always wanting to extend the group. Cheers Harry

Hey Harry

Thanks for the reply and the offer.  9am on a Saturday is a bit late for me - kids school sports - but thanks again for the offer.

Cheers John

G'day, Harry. If you're keen for another rider I'd like to tag along?

Hey Alexander, always keen to have another rider join us and as mentioned we start from Mills St and Beaconsfield Parade and leave there at 9am (as we aren't early riders) on Saturdays so you could either meet us there or we could meet you along the way some where. Last weekend we only rode to Mordi as one of the guys had something on but on the way back we tried the rotating paceline which was very interesting to say the least but it's things like that we will try so hope you maybe able to bring in a few ideas for us to try but if not welcome to join in.

Hi John, if you're after a Sunday ride then check out The 9 Oclockers.  If you're after good coffee, fun conversation and 30/35kmph (and your age group will suit)! check out the group on Melbourne Cyclist!!
