Cycling in Melbourne Australia

Hi all.  Can anybody recommend a decent morning ride route starting Inner West and finishing in Melbourne CBD?

I'm not originally from Melbourne so am struggling to find a good route which will guarantee some decent k's in the limited amount of time I have before work. I've tried Beach Rd but it's too busy with traffic on the way back and defeats the purpose. I tried my usual weekend ride of heading through northern suburbs to Heidelberg and back but again, the traffic is a nightmare and I barely average 15kmph with the amount of stopping.

I'm keen to ride 50-60km's and would like to achieve this in under 2 hours so any RECOMMENDATIONS appreciated! : )

Melbournes inner west is not 50-60 km's from the CBD. So I'm a bit confuzzed about the question - sorry.

What's not to understand? : ) "Start inner west and finish in CBD".  So, i'd like to leave home, ride 50-60km's and finish in the CBD. It doesn't have to be a straight line ;)     As I said, i've been from Inner West --> Beach Rd --> CBD and Inner West --> Heidelberg --> CBD but the traffic is too busy in a morning into the city and i'm finding my average KMPH is limited.

Thanks : )

Aah now I get it.

A friend uses the Yarra trail from Kew, she reckons it's a good run and about 20 km's one way, along the curves of the river.  You could go out via Heidelberg Rd, then turn left at Chandler Highway to find the Yarra trail.

Cheers,

Hi Sargie, I live in the inner West too, and work in the CBD so I only get 12kms in on my morning commute!  If you do manage to find a decent ride post it on here, I wouldn't mind doing a few extra kms on my way to work too.  I've also tried the Beach Rd run and, yes, it is just too busy. I reserve that ride for Sundays now.  But I don't know about starting from Kew, it's nowhere near where I live ??!!
Which way did you go to Heidelberg from inner west?

I've tried several ways, firstly up through Flemington and out to Bell St and along all the way to Heidelberg, however, Bell St not the most cycle friendly. Secondly, a similar route past Flemington and along Royal Parade and onto Lower Heidelberg Rd that way but again, too busy & unsafe in a morning.  The out leg wasn't too bad it's just the inward leg back to the CBD which was painfully busy.   In contrast I got a beautiful 85km ride down Beach Rd yesterday and had forgotten how nice it can be on a Spring Sunday afternoon!

Well, if you're happy to go up and across the north like Bell St, then try Gaffney St/Murray Rd. Gaffney has bike lanes, Murray has them sometimes, and they are not continued along Southern Rd, but Murray Rd is a bit hilly, and a bit tight (especially when there's traffic), going through Preston. Alternatively, use Cramer St/Gower St.
