Cycling in Melbourne Australia

Riding through melbourne cbd is nothing short of stressful, near misses, people stopping to let passengers off in the bike lane. People turning left and cutting you off on the bike lane.

I ride on Williams st up to bourke st from the Yarra and it is always a nightmare, there are signs along it saying it is a clearway 730-930 and I ride from 8-9 and every day people are standing or parked along there, even taxis. To make it worse people often open their door while I'm riding around their cars...

I even saw inspecters walk passed williams st and they would have seen all the cars along there and didn't even bother going down.

It annoys me every day, and in the afternoon when I ride home at 5 it is almost as bad.

Melbourne has the flat terrain to be the best cycling city in Australia but at the moment it is a joke.

I honestly don't have a problem riding in the cbd. I usually go up Elizabeth St but use William St without any grief. I also often use Collins St. I'm a bit wary of Princess Bridge and that 300mm bike lane though and always watching for some idiot to open a car door to get out.

That's rush hour - get used to sharing and chill a little.
why should I? it is marked as a CLEARWAY for obvious reasons, so its not dangerous for cyclists to ride out into traffic to overtake cars. And that is why I was knocked off my bike today by a truck, they illegally parked in the CLEARWAY and opened the door onto me. And I should just accept it??
What do you propose?
actually enforcing the clearway for one, people would learn once they got a few fines. Painting it green and putting those bumpy lines that let drivers know when they have crossed into the bike lane might help too. They spent so much money fixing swanston st up, but william st is full of pot holes still.

William St should have permanent, physically separated lanes.  It's wide enough.  That was promised by the last government's Victorian Cycle Strategy.  City of Melbourne needs to be pushed to do it, it's in their Transport Strategy also.

@Oscar, just because you are a tough bloke and can mix it with deadly motor vehicles, doesn't mean a whole lot of the population just won't hack it. They will choose other means of transport, including in some cases, cars.

Yeah, there are lots of things we could spend money on, and laws we could make, and more police etc... But for today Cyl will just have to find a way to deal with it.

ok I will continue being hit by cars /rolls eyes
