Cycling in Melbourne Australia

Well yesterday may of indeed been Cadel Evans Day. And then last night this crap was broadcast across Australia on Channel 10.

Madga's rant starts at about 1:20 and really goes full throttle at 5:55. Julia Morris adds extra venom as well.Watch if you wish.

Apparently Magda has apologised. And promised to wear lycra. Ok.

Like a few of the people eho commented on the channel ten forum, this was probably a bit too close to home for Robbie. I believe his brother was knocked off his bike by a hit'n'run driver a couple of months ago.

No I don't buy that as an apology. It was pathetic. Weasel words if I ever saw it - apologised for offence but did not acknowledge the basis for the offence. She should go through, line by line, what she said and pick it over for the obnoxious crap that it was. Then she should attone for it in a genuine way, rather than buying herself a new bike and riding to work for ONE DAY in a publicity event.

The Age is reporting her apology, too.

For those "not buying it", be gracious, take it on face value. If she doesn't turn up on Ride to Work Day, in lycra, then unleash the hounds.

Remember those stretched denim look knicks that Pantani & a couple of other euro riders used to wear in the mid 90's? Oh yeah, a Sharon Strzelecki goes cycling crossover .... think about it.

This is good coverage, even though it is highly unfortunate where it came from. However, as suggested, long-term it may play in the favour of cycling if she becomes a public advocate.

Love to see it in the HSun, but won't be holding my breath.

Barely would've turned blue eh?

Nice article, fwiw. I REALLY hope she takes up the offer of the Amy's Ride. R2WD is 'commuting', which she commenced saying she is for. And AGF's credo is to try to defeat the sentiment she, and Morris, were putting out there.

Yeah, nice article. Shame about the tone of the majority of the comments, but that's to be expected, eh?

I hope she takes up the AGF offer, too. I also hope they contact Julia Morris and suggest the same.

Again, in the replies to The Age article, there is call for registration of and/or road tax levy on cyclists.

Okay, let's do the road tax thing on the basis of power and weight or area of road taken up when stationary. Then, the road ragers in 4WD or other forms of gas guzzlers will be paying extra, listen to the bleating then.

But when we pay our registration (not Transport Accident charge) say $183.30, the same as a car, then we should be able to use a whole lane with impunity. How would that upset the clowns who want to run bikes off the road!

Reply to This

I thought we were already legally able to use the whole lane ;-)

Any government which introduces registration for cyclists had better just lock me up now, and throw away the key, because I won't pay and I won't stop cycling.

The reason bicycle registration will never get up is the bureaucrats behind successive governments know it that bicycle rego is an expensive bag of hurt for everybody except motorists, and motorists will get no benefit from it, anyway. (Would probably put the total cost of rego and CTP up across the board.)

Oh, and of course there are clowns calling for bicycle registration, it's the usual blame the victim mentality rampant in the motoring community.
