Cycling in Melbourne Australia
Let's make cycling an election issue.
I think bike should be part of this election. I've made this short film . Tony Abbott, Not the Man, as a challenge to Tony who should "own" the issue, he being so keen to be seen on a bike.
I argue, though, that he does not have the vision to see where bikes
could take us. I try to help him along by inventing a line of thought
for him if he was to see the light, linking him up with a much more
visionary conservative when it comes to bikes, London's Mayor, Boris
Johnson.
I acknowledge Labor is not much better but argue that if they win power and the green control the balance, we might make progress.
Is this a fruitful path folks? Abbott will be on Q and A next Monday. Would you like to see him asked a bike question?

I have to say that the prospect of Tony Abbott as PM terrifies me. Any right-wing muppet but the mad monk, please. Gawd, come back, John Howard, all is forgiven. (Well, comparatively speaking...) I wouldn't vote coalition if they had banning cars and making bikes compulsory as their major platform.

I used Tony, not out of love, but because he set himself up as the cycle poster boy at the Fed. level. I do think in some ways it can be a Fed. issue. Pushing the states to bring in helmets was done by the Hawke Govt.

Good video, and good point. The Greens occasionally mention cycling, but today I read their policy summary, and it isn't mentioned at all on the transport page.
I think cycling in Australia for the average person is easier than it is in Northern Europe.... Here most people live in the cities, most journeys are a few kilometres, and the weather is normally very pleasant!
