Cycling in Melbourne Australia
So yesterday some car rammed the back of my bike as I was taking off at the corner of toorak/chapel. I live in Prahran and while it is closer to ride on Williams rd, because there is no bike lane on this road I usually take Chapel St (also it is really hilly). I only ride 500m before taking a side street but its 500m of hell! the northern part between the bridge and toorak road is the worst, it made my daily commute a nightmare, trying to squeeze passed cars on that dumb cobblestone gutter. Not only that, pedestrians are so ignorant, they step out in between parked cars without even looking, even when I almost run them down they just carry on walking like nothing happened. And then add in trams, cars that edge into the bike lane, people who open their doors into the bike lane and its just a world of frustration and near misses. I have seen so many riders almost get knocked down by cars that are trying to quickly park. I want to write to the council to complain but I feel like it won't do anything.
I can't think of a better solution other than on the spot fines for pedestrians (which they actually have done in the past) or removing the parked cars from chapel st (which they would never do).
But it is so bad when my lease is up I will probably move out of this area because I like to ride but really dread chapel st.
