Melbourne Cyclist

Cycling in Melbourne Australia

I have been cycling in Melbourne for over ten years, which like any other populated area is full of it's own dramas, danger and excitement. I cycle every day to work and have been noticing more and more, that the new fad is to draft behind someone faster that yourself!

It's a extremely dangerous if you had to stop suddenly, and downright lazy.

I would not say I was a drafter for I have a lot of trouble keeping up with other cyclists. When I get someone with similar ability I usually pass them. If there is someone a little faster I can hold them for awhile but they usually get away from me anyway.
My input would be if you have the same person doing the same route daily why not say hello and have a chat you may find that they will indeed take a turn at the front once you get to know them. I see a lot of riders on my commute to work (unfortunately by car) and there are definitely some drafters but you see some guys that usually ride on there own teaming up with a few others and have a small group of 3-4, they are chatting as they ride until they hit one of the hills.
I doubt if I ever would draft for I expect my lack of control on the bike would get me in trouble big time.
Hear hear! Well said.
Even though I started this discussion about drafters I have no problem is the effort that you put in is reciprocated! i.e a group of riders no matter what bike you have shares the work. Usually though this is something that is mainly for crazy Saturday and Sunday's down Beach Road etc.
Thankyou to all! keep the comments coming it's great to hear what you all think!
Ride faster.
Like most things it depends on the situation.
I draft sometimes, and other times I hang back.
I don't care if someone drafts me, in fact I'm pleased to help - I'm going to ride at my own pace anyway so no big deal if someone gets an easier ride.
