Cycling in Melbourne Australia

Hi All,

I have decided to start tiding to work from Doncaster East.

I have figured I can get to Johnston St all along bike paths, but wondering about the best way from there to Flinders St.

Any suggestions?

Cheers,

Yes

Bikely is  great resource for searching for bike route options: see what others are doing

Thanks Alex, I have tried to get onto bikely but not had much luck.
Don't get onto Johnston St. Assuming you are on the Yarra Trail, stay on it  - or go the length of Kew Blvd ( safer riding on that than the Yarra Trail)  - then back onto the Yarra Trail and into the CBD, coming out at Federation Square just next to Flinders Street.
Agree DJ.  That's a great way.

Hi David

If I ride to city from Doncaster I get off at chandler highway take  heidelberg rd to clifton hill

smith st to victoria st then left into gisborne st spring st then right into flinders st

this dodges most of the hills and is the fastest way using paths and rds that I have found suggest you use google maps or google earth to sus out alternative routes

 Cheers Rob

It just depends on how direct you want to be in your commute.  If I have the time, I like to do both boulevards and pop up in the city at Fed Square.  This gives me about 25k's without a set of lights and safe riding.  It's not direct, but it's nice.

The best thing to do is try a few different ways on bikes paths and then choose something that suits you.  If you want bike path, there's Collingwood Childrens Farm and then up some backroads.  If you don't mind some roads, Victoria St is OK at certain times of the morning before getting on to Albert St for the Copenhagen bike lane experience.

But congrats to you for riding to work.  One of the best kept secrets.

Wow, thanks for all the responses guys.

I have done a couple of test runs, (which nearly killed me)

Followed Yarra Trail to Fairfield, and went across that skinny little bridge. Then over to Merri Creek and got off that at Johnston St, then went straight down Nicholson/Lennox St and shot over to MCG, across bridge and came out near Fed Square.

About 24 Ks. I think I need to work up to riding 50 Ks a day but i'll get there.

Maybe once i get fitter and faster I will look at going all the way along the Yarra, but that looks like adding on several K's to the journey.
