Cycling in Melbourne Australia
Hi Everyone,
My name is Simon I am new to Melbourne and just moved in down St. Kilda way. I am a recreational rider but am hoping to take my riding up a gear. I am looking for some training to improve my road cycling with the goal of competing in a few crits or even road races over the next few years. I am looking for some things i can do off the bike, strength/power work etc, i have been to standard gyms before but am looking for something different.
Any thoughts?
Happy riding!

Take few rides in the dandenongs, the hills will give you strength.

Maybe a rowing club!
Or start a regular routine up and down the thousand steps.http://www.weekendnotes.com/ferntree-gully/9838/
The rowing option would probably be closer for you though.
Have you tried kettlebells ? I love kettlebell workouts, a lot of workout in a short time.
Also yoga, yoga is the perfect accompaniment to cycling, it builds core strength, balance and stretches out all the bits that don't get stretched on the bike. When I started doing crits my back was in a lot of pain because my core was weak, a weekly yoga class sorted that out very quickly.

Have you tried an exercise routine that involves pistol squat, burpees and jumping jacks.
I do these as a circuit three times per week and it really seems to help with my cycling.
I would not say that I am a seasoned cyclist as I ride to work and back but I am looking to get more into BMX racing if I continue to get stronger on the routine.
Thanks
