Cycling in Melbourne Australia
Some will be familiar with this, but the Public Transport Users is a good source of facts on how much car drivers contribute to road costs.

Permalink Reply by Steve Jay on February 16, 2012 at 7:03am simply laugh and tell people they are wrong, when they say rego is a "ticket to drive on the road." You can't reason with the unreasonable and anybody using that argument doesn't have enough road law knowledge to warrant holding a licence (morally, anyway.)
Driving is a conditional privilege, hence it is licenced. Registration is a means of tracking a deadly weapon and certifying it's mechanical road-worthiness at the time of first registering it. That's all it pays for, the registry and access to it by the authorities. Most of what car owners pay in "registration" is compulsory third party, a tacit admission that driving is seriously dangerous, even with the best will and responsibility of the driver.

Shame that it's only at the time of registering. 10 years later................
Permalink Reply by Steve Jay on February 23, 2012 at 7:38am Well, theoretically, there are supposed to be regular, random stops and checks but how many cops are mechanics? And, lets face it, there are 100 full time hwy patrol cops in Victoria, I'd rather those guys focused on the bad and ignorant drivers, than the cars. It always comes down to the nut holding the wheel :-)
