Melbourne Cyclist

Cycling in Melbourne Australia

We all know how photography, great pics of people on bikes, mostly of the stately sort, have energized cycle chic movements around the world. There are now 34 affiliated cycle chics, I'm told,  with one here in Sydney.

But what about graphic art? Can it do a bit more. Art has a special status , cachet, and reaches into different corners of society. Historically, painters and printmakers have not paid much attention to bikes. When they did, like Toulouse-Lautrec at the end of the 19th century , bikes were riding high anyway, highly respected transport and sports machines. Women owed their freedom to the bike

Here, I've turned an old photo of that period first, into a drawing, and then a solar etching.

So, Nothing but Bikes, at the Tap gallery, Darlinghurst,Sydeny  opening July 4th. for two weeks, is testing whether art can can cast a glow over cycing of the stately sort.

61 works on the same topic by the same bike-mad artist, it's probably a world first in art and activism, will try to do just that.

But will it make any difference? Do you have bike art on the walls. Did you ever?

The opening will be mid show on the 10th July, at 3 pm.

All who come on a bike at 3 pm will be in a draw for art. The gallery, 45 Burton,  is just one block from the new Bourke st. Cycleway we are fighting to defend.

It's all good publicity, and a positive expression of both art and cycling. Have to say that I LOVE the third work! It's so "early trade union" in it's muscular materialism, yet such a depiction of humanity in effort. Any chance of bringing the exhibition to Melbs, Mike?
My wife is Russian and we have folders full of reproductions of soviet era posters. Maybe that's the influence. I wonder what you'd make of the vibe from Mikael Colville-Andersen's portrait? As for coming to Melb. I'd love to. it's my home town and I have the strong link to Readings, but iIve have to get some sponsorship.

A friend has some of the old-school bicycle brand advertising posters on his walls.  I quite like them.  Wouldn't mind to get one (copy, of course) if I find one that suits.
I can do that, Cory, when the show is over. You can see how I'd turn them into solar etchings on my blog, httop://situp-cycle.com. I attach a proud 19th century family supporting their daugther's new passion
