Cycling in Melbourne Australia
Hey all, long time reader, first time posting.
I have been with my road bike for almost 2 years and I feel that I need to do bike fit again after backpain that has sidelined me from regular cycling in the last 2 months. I did a CT Scan of my lumbar spine and there is mild disk bulging, being the cause of back pain.
I wonder if anybody has experience with reliable bike fitter who also provides physio?
I had my bike fit in a bicycle shop in Melbourne CBD and to be honest I was surprised to know that it took only about 30 minutes to do, compared to my mates who spent about 2-3 hours.
I have googled and come up with few options but I am still not decided where to go.
Appreciate if you guys can share your experience or knowledge. I dont mind travel a bit if the place is not within inner CBD (I live in inner north).
Thanks a lot,
Mike

Although, to an extent, an actual 'fit' is a 'fit', there are people that focus more upon race, while others focus more upon distance. Oh, and often (but not always) what you get in a bike shop is pretty minimal, in my experience.
Permalink Reply by Mike on July 13, 2011 at 11:36am Thanks for your reply. I am doing regular weekend cycling say 75-130 a day on weekly basis, in addition to daily commuting 15 km. Also, once every month or two, riding outside Melbourne for 2-3 days.
I actually want to make sure that the bike and its components that I ride is suitable for me, to avoid any injury.

I haven't been there personally, but I have quite a few friends who really rave about their setups from CycleScience, in Mitcham.

I was very pleased with the service.
Permalink Reply by Harry Tana on July 25, 2011 at 10:38pm Hey Mike, I brought a bike from Avanti Plus in Croydon and I tell you what the fit I got from him was excellent.
The guys name there is Andrew and an ex rider at the moment due to running his own shop.
When I told Andrew what I was wanting to he took all my measurements and fitted me to the right size bike even though the bike I wanted he didn't have in store but made sure the one I got was the correct size before ordering it.
Once I got my new bike he spent a good 45mins making adjustments to it ( I didn't realise there was so much in it) and watching me ride on the trainer making adjustments as I went and I tell you it feels just right.
I had previously gone to other bike shops and all they seemed keen to do was sell me a bike so I would recomend Andrew to anyone and so much so that I took my brother to him to have a bike fitted that he had brought from another shop and the frame was too big for him and Andrew made changes to the bike to make it fit and all he charged him for was the parts he had to change. ( I probably shouldn't of said he didn't charge for the fit but it was true)
Avanti PLus at Croydon and ask for Andrew that's who I would highly recomend

I'm a rider and a physiotherapist who specialises in sports injuries. I work at City Baths Sports & Spinal and we do musculoskeletal screening and bike setup there. Basically take a whole heap of measurements of you - flexibility, strength and the like, then customise the bike fit to those attributes/limitations. I've completed a cycling biomechanics course and spent time with probably the guru of this sort of thing - Emma Coulson - http://www.topbike.com.au /physio.htm - so you could either see her, or call me at City Baths. Either way you'll be able to claim part of it back on private health insurance.
Hope this helps.
