Cycling in Melbourne Australia

Hi, wondering if there are any people on Melbourne Cyclist who'd like a Bicycle Music Festival to start up in Victoria. If so please join the Melbourne Cyclist 'Bicycle Music Festival' Group. Also....if you're a musician (amateur or pro) who rides a bicycle , please let me know. Ideas and comments are welcome.

Grouse, will do. Could also assist with promotion and/or recording stuff via YarraBUG Radio, so contact me!

Thanks ChrisS, that'd be wonderful. Now all that's needed is to find those bicycle riding musicians.....I can probably talk a few people into it ;-).....perhaps YarraBUG Radio knows a few??

Also, just a note, in America they use bicycles to power the PA (combined with solar and battery)...so the audience actually pedals to help make the music happen (audience participation at it's best). I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to rig up something similar. www.rockthebike.com has a bit more info.

Does part of this idea involve turning your bike into an instrument? This idea has been in the back of my mind for a few years. I've ridden to a few folk festivals around NSW/ACT (latest was from Sydney to the National Folk Festival in Canberra over Easter), and would love to be able to 'play the bike' in some form. Carrying the 13kg piano accordian with luggage is not really an option. Tuned spokes maybe? Or convert the bike into some form of Bush Bass (Don't think the aluminium frame would produce quite the depth of sound or resonance that the original wooden tea chests produced....) Anyone seen anything, or have other ideas?

Welcome RobK, turning your bike into an instrument...why not!! I think the only requirement for a Bicycle Music Festival is that you have to turn up on a bicycle. As to the Piano Accordian, it's a fantastic instrument...sure you can't get it on ya bike? My cello in it's hard case weighs 10kg and all the electronics (loop stations, pedals, effects, mini stage, mixing desk) weight about 15kg...I am on a cargo bike so that makes it a bit easier to load.

I've just finished doing some recording for a band called Dirtbird (www.myspace.com/dirtbirdaus) and they said they'd be into riding to a Bicycle Music Festival.....I also found a gutarist who's riden around Oz (http://www.myspace.com/robsawyer).

Careful - those old hippies on YarraBugRadio will have you listening to old bootlegs of Grateful Dead Live with 20 min jams.

Oh do piss off, our tastes steer towards Flamingo favourites, Rammstein, early Australian punk and a nice sprinkle of death metal for good measure. Kristin mentioned shes got a cello - are you familiar with any of Apocalyptica's stuff?

Yes, I've got a cello and I'm familiar with (and like) Apocalyptica. I can play a few lines of Smoke on the Water, House of the Rising Sun and a few other Pub Survival Hits (not Stairway to Heaven, so don't ask). Mainly I play my own stuff, I'm a 'qualified' (Bmus VCA) composer, whatever that means?

20min jams are great fun for musicians but generally pretty darn boring for the audience.....?

Old hippies will be most welcome at Bicycle Music Festivals...as long as they can still ride a bike! :-)

Sorry - I've gone all Ballardian - as one does - and it's reverberating around my social skills.I'll swot up on death metal - old skool and post -ironic.

FXH - sounds like you're now truly ready to join the 'BICYCLE MUSIC FESTIVAL" group now!

But aren't we all Ballardians now?

By Ballardian, are you suggesting that I/we/you/'the whole of society' is subscribing to the idea of a dystopian modernity, bleak man-made landscapes & the psychological effects of technological, social or environmental developments?

Partly - or that there are parallel /time shift /doppelgängers. Especially when biking - sometimes i feel i'm in another world with black 4wds full of school mums wanting to run me down or just not seeing me cos i'm alien other times I feel equally disconnected from just as aggressive bunches of men in stretchy testicle display units - "on ya right" and "passing"..
