ASSISTANCE REQUESTED - Bayside Council - Leader Article
Hi Folks,
As some of you may be aware Michael Forbes (www.michaelforbes.org) a cyclist badly injured in an accident on Beach Rd has been lobbying via a petition the Bayside council which is holding out on implementing weekend clearways.
The petition was submitted to the council last week with over 2200 signatures, 550 of them bayside residents.
The Bayside Leader has today published a story relating to the petition asking whether council should reconsider their position. It is important to counteract the no-doubt large amount of negative feedback they will receive, so if you can please:
- put a post on web sites you may be involved with encouraging
people to add their comments.
- get the word out that people can comment on the story
- place a comment yourselves

The comments in the Bayside Leader seem to have some sway with council.

I'm not sure clearways are the answer. I'd rather see parking, cycle lane and one traffic lane each way for the full length as all the weaving in and out caused by people trying to overtake causes problems whether it's clear all the way or the current stupid setup. 2 lanes and clearway will just push up traffic speed and encourage it as an alternative trunk.
But I'll cetainly do my bit to counter the rabid cyclophobes who pop up. Always happy to speak reason in the face of lunacy born of addiction :-)

You may be right but I think this is a step in the right direction and eventually may lead

Hi Simon,
Yep I know thouroughly depressing weren't they. But if you really want to be depressed come to the council meeting tomorrow and hear the villification and outrageous vindictive claims from some residents If ever there was a need to get as many cyclists to attend a council meeting, tomorrow night is that night.

The invective is shameful. It's amazing how easily it is for these people to dehumanise others just because they don't fall into line like good little "sheeple." Serial killers don't dissociate their victims humanity to the degree some of the correspondents have in the comments on that article.
And is somebody planning to send in that photo to Media Watch, it's clearly a shot from RTB or such, and not reflective of normal cycle traffic. Think I might. Disgraceful overstating of the "problem."
On the subject of the weekend clearway... Have to say I'm not convinced that two lanes flat-out is better for cyclists. I feel a lot more confident holding my own in the lane knowing that parking a bit further up will force cars in the left lane into the outer one, anyway. I'd rather see parking the full length. Certainly the half and half thing is useless, and doesn't serve anybody much.
Why does Beach Rd have to have 2 lanes of high speed motor traffic, and why are trucks allowed to use it? It's a dormitory street with a linear park down one side, effectively. Should be one lane, 50km/h.

Guess what? 10th time lucky, Bayside Council have voted to allow a 12 month trial of the weekend parking restrictions.
Who would of thunk it? Although Bayside Leader can't let the news go by without a bit of the usual snark:
Bayside Council approves weekend parking ban in Beach Rd
Cyclists will now get a clear run in Beach Rd, including this stretch in Beaumaris, on weekend mornings as part of a one-year trial.
BAYSIDE Council has buckled to cyclists and agreed to trial a Beach Rd parking ban.
Next month the council will start a year-long trial preventing motorists from parking or stopping along the arterial on weekend mornings.
The move made last night, after repeated refusals by the council to agree to the Saturday and Sunday 6am to 10am no-stopping zones, means Bayside joins Kingston and Port Phillip councils in a ban.
Cyclists will now have an unimpeded ride along the whole of Route 33 from Mordialloc to Port Melbourne on weekend mornings.

Yep, Break out the Champagne! it's been a long time coming. What we have to do now is concentrate on cyclist behavior during the trial and reign in some of the folks that don't obey road rules
