Melbourne Cyclist

Cycling in Melbourne Australia

Hello!

Next weekend a group of us are riding to Mcrae on the Mornington Peninsula. We're all pretty new to road cycling and none of us have ridden beyond Black Rock... does anyone have any advice for the ride? Any good spots to stop along the way? Any parts of the road we should be extra careful around? Any hints or advice would be very warmly welcomed!

Cheers

Julia

After the Mordialloc roundabout proceed down Nepean Hwy for about 300m & turn left at first set of lights & across rail lines. You are now on Station St, which has a bike lane and a lot less traffic than the Hwy, it runs parallel for around 8kms. You can cut back onto the Hwy just before Patterson River; there is a way through there on the bike paths that puts you on the Hwy further south, but I am not familiar with it, check a map. Proceed down Hwy to Frankston; you have the choice of Olivers Hill, which is steep, or cutting through the back roads from Bay st Frankston, slightly easier but still a climb. From the top of Olivers Hill just follow your nose down the Hwy until you get to Beluera Hill rd Mornington - turn right to get down to the bay & left to follow the Esplanade; this will take you to Dromana/Mcrae. This can be narrow & blocking cars is a sure way to piss everyone off so it's best to ride single file through here & pull over occasionally to let cars through. Anywhere along there is good for a stop/rest, Mt Martha has a good beach to take a swim. Safe Ride!

Hi John,

Thanks so much for such a detailed reply! We'll most definitely be taking your advice out on the road with us.

Take care,

Julia
