Melbourne Cyclist

Cycling in Melbourne Australia

Richard Monfries

A bicyclist who is serial flasher, or a flasher that rides a bike?: in The Age today

Recently The Age seemed to be sympathetically reporting incidents where cyclists have been injured on the road, and sometimes, unfortunately, killed.

What a difference a week makes, and what a difference a headline makes. In today's The Age there's this - Bicycle flasher jailed - the crime is serious, and the punishment fits the crime. But would it have grabbed any reader's attention if it just said - Serial flasher jailed - ?

Isn't The Age planning to move from Broadsheet to Tabloid sometime soon? ;-)

Meh.

It was reported, quite overtly, that he was a cyclist back when they were trying to identify/catch him. (Perhaps, in the same way that they would if he were a 'cab driver' or some other method to stand out from the crowd). The photofit had him in a helmet.

So... this was just following up on that meme. I probably wouldn't have made the link myself, except that it had cyclist in the headline. The same as I'd expect, if he were a cab driver.

(Not wanting to say anything against cabbies - just using it as an example).

(Use of the term 'bicyclist' however. BLEAUGH! ) ;)
