Cycling in Melbourne Australia

Hi All,
I have been commuting to and from work for a while now. In the mornings I travel from Camberwell Junction along either Burwood/Bridge or Riversdale/Swan routes. These roads are in a pretty poor condition, with large potholes etc making the ride quite uncomfortable. Can anyone offer any alternative routes with better riding conditions? I know about the Yarra path but it's a bit out of the way for me.

Do others agree that the roads are bad, or am I just being a pit precious?

As a side point, is it possible to make requests for road maintainence? What about having more bike lanes (because the drivers always think they can squeeze past)? Who should I contact: VicRoads, Council, Local MP?

Think other here would be better at proposing alternative routes, but have you had a look at local routes on bikely?

For local advocacy stuff you should contact Boroondara BUG.

Can't really think of a better route, unless you want to swim :-) Other options are south to the yarra trail or north to come in along either Victoria or the footbridge at Burnley st.

Careful what you wish for with respect to bike lanes; you may find that if they get built it'll only be where the road is wide enough that they weren't needed, and since the majority of glass, gravel and other rubbish is mostly "swept" off the road by passing traffic, the presence of a bike lane will mean that all the crap will end in the bike lane, whereas without a bike lane it'll be swept further off the road.

Vic Roads are responsible for the major roads, the various councils for the rest. If you contact them to request hazards to be fixed, do it in writing (even if just an email). BV have a list of all the councils and their respective email addresses, http://www.bv.com.au/change-the-world/10122
